Understanding WiFi Quality
Wireless technologies and their theoretical speeds: *
802.11b – 11Mbps (2.4GHz)
802.11a – 54Mbps (5GHz)
802.11g – 54 Mbps (2.4GHz)
802.11n – 600Mbps (2.4GHz and 5GHz)
802.11ac – 1300Mbps (5GHz)
Wireless technologies and their real-world speeds: *
802.11b – 2-3Mbps (2.4GHz)
802.11a – 20Mbps (5GHz)
802.11g – 20 Mbps (2.4GHz)
802.11n – 40-50Mbps (2.4GHz and 5GHz)
802.11ac – 70-200 Mbps (5GHz)
These speeds can vary more still depending on:
-
Your distance from the router
-
The obstacles between you and the router
-
Other radio interference in the area
-
The quality of the router
-
The quality of the wireless card on the receiving device.
Another thing to note is that 5GHz doesn’t reach as far or penetrate objects as well as 2.4GHz.
