Understanding WiFi Quality

Wireless technologies and their theoretical speeds: *

802.11b – 11Mbps (2.4GHz)

802.11a – 54Mbps (5GHz)

802.11g – 54 Mbps (2.4GHz)

802.11n – 600Mbps (2.4GHz and 5GHz)

802.11ac – 1300Mbps (5GHz)

Wireless technologies and their real-world speeds: *

802.11b – 2-3Mbps (2.4GHz)

802.11a – 20Mbps (5GHz)

802.11g – 20 Mbps (2.4GHz)

802.11n – 40-50Mbps (2.4GHz and 5GHz)

802.11ac – 70-200 Mbps (5GHz)

These speeds can vary more still depending on:

  1. Your distance from the router

  2. The obstacles between you and the router

  3. Other radio interference in the area

  4. The quality of the router

  5. The quality of the wireless card on the receiving device.

Another thing to note is that 5GHz doesn’t reach as far or penetrate objects as well as 2.4GHz.
